FashionTech - designer Anouk Wipprecht integrates fashion and technology

Discover how the FLUX Beamo laser cutter helped fashion designer Anouk Wipprecht in her Pangolin Scales project.

Anouk Wipprecht is a designer from The Netherlands, but she is more than just a fashion designer. She is also an engineer, a teacher, and a speaker. She has been dedicated to the question of how to combine fashion with engineering, science, and interactive design for over 15 years.

A mind reading dress?

In 2020, Anouk Wipprecht created a project called the Pangolin Scales. Combining laser engraving, 3D printing, and a brain-computer interface, she designed a dress that can reflect the wearer’s emotions. The lights and movement of the dress can have a total of 64 different combinations. This Pangolin dress can read the wearer’s brain waves, and expresses them via the lights’ frequency, colour, and movement.

The dress was shown off during the Ars Electronica Festival 2020 in Linz, Austria.

Combining materials

For a multi-disciplinary designer like Wipprecht, there is always a need to use multiple materials and it can be challenging to combine them. In this Pangolin Scales project, our Beamo laser cutter and engraver easily created various pieces from different materials. Whether it’s acrylic, leather, or fabric, our laser cutter can turn a designer’s imagination into reality in an instant. Even when you need to change the design, our laser cutters can help you make quick changes and iterations to get the best end result.
